At an industry-sponsored symposium held in conjunction with the Society of Surgical Oncology’s 55th Annual Cancer Symposium in Denver, four leaders in surgical oncology, radiation oncology, hematology/oncology, and physiology presented data on new issues in the detection and treatment of breast cancer. Topics included the implications of new accelerated partial-breast radiation therapy techniques, the conclusions of the ATAC trial comparing tamoxifen and anastrozole efficacy and toxicity, the advances in molecular profiling of breast cancer associated with new cDNA microarray techniques, and the potential role of COX-2 inhibitors in preventing or treating breast cancer.
