An estimated 1 million U.S. adults have Parkinson’s disease (PD), a progressive neurodegenerative movement disorder that affects motor and cognitive function and significantly impairs quality of life. Neurologists, gerontologists, primary care physicians, and other clinicians comprise a multidisciplinary team collaborating to improve outcomes for patients with PD. Underlying competency and knowledge gaps in the management of PD continue to exist among clinicians who treat patients with PD. The root causes underlying knowledge and clinical practice gaps include clinician time constraints and the need for broader dissemination of emerging data on the management of PD. With best practices in the management of PD continually evolving, clinical advances need to be more widely disseminated. To improve practice and patient outcomes, this continuing education program focuses on improving early diagnosis and initiation of therapy, including new imaging techniques to differentiate PD from disorders with similar symptoms; understanding treatment options both for motor and nonmotor features of PD; developing customized treatment plans; and increasing awareness of new approaches to improve the management of PD. Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to: 1. Differentiate Parkinson’s disease (PD) from other parkinsonian disorders to facilitate earlier diagnosis of PD. 2. Develop individualized treatment plans to address common motor symptoms in patients with varying phases of PD. 3. Implement treatment strategies to address common nonmotor symptoms in patients with PD.
