Program Description

An interactive CME-certified interactive newsletter series on the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a slowly progressive respiratory disease characterized by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible. Manifestations of COPD include dyspnea, poor exercise tolerance, chronic cough with or without sputum production, wheezing, and respiratory failure or right heart failure. In the United States, COPD affects more than 5% of the adult population and is the third leading cause of death. Advances in medical therapies and better disease management approaches have increased the recognition that COPD is preventable and treatable. Yet, COPD remains both underdiagnosed and undertreated in primary care settings.

To reduce the health burden caused by COPD, pulmonologists and primary care clinicians need to enhance their ability to diagnose and assess COPD, to implement pulmonary rehabilitation interventions, and to effectively use long-term maintenance therapy. The goal of this CE/CME activity is to expand the ability of primary care clinicians to provide optimal management of COPD, ultimately improving outcomes for the many patients who suffer from COPD.

This activity is jointly provided by Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, and MCM Education.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for primary care and internal medicine physicians, pulmonologists, and other clinicians interested and involved in the treatment of patients with COPD.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify patients for whom a diagnosis of COPD should be considered.
  2. Perform a combined assessment of COPD, including symptoms, airflow limitation, and the risk of exacerbations.
  3. Discuss evidence for the beneficial effects of pulmonary rehabilitation, including exercise, in patients with COPD.
