This activity will help clinicians achieve greater competency in accurately diagnosing COPD, assessing disease severity, and optimizing the use of nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions in tailored COPD treatment plans. COPD is a slowly progressive respiratory disease characterized by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible. Manifestations of COPD include dyspnea, poor exercise tolerance, chronic cough with or without sputum production, wheezing, and respiratory failure or right heart failure. In the United States, about 15 million adults have been diagnosed with COPD; and it is the third leading cause of death. However, it remains both underdiagnosed and undertreated.
This educational activity is designed to meet the needs of community pulmonologists and primary care clinicians involved in the care of patients with COPD.
Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:
- Complete a comprehensive assessment of COPD, including symptoms, airflow limitation, and the risk of exacerbations.
- Develop tailored COPD treatment approaches based on assessment of individual patients’ symptoms and exacerbation risk.
